Pooja Dugar is an Early Learning Expert and the Founder and Director of Leap Years Preschool, an early learning school for children ages one to five. The enriched curriculum features a unique partnership of core subjects, such as reading and math, with fine arts, including yoga and music, providing your child with the freedom to learn and grow through play. After doing her Montessori teacher’s training, Pooja understood what kind of teacher she wanted to be. She knew that research into early childhood education displayed how experience-based brain development sets a course for future learning, health and behaviour.
Pooja realized that age-specific curriculum aimed at engaging and teaching the whole child was needed, so she searched for a school doing just that. When she couldn’t find it, she began creating a curriculum of her own. “When I decided I wanted to be a Teacher, it is to help others find their passion in life. Through Leap Years, I know that children have an incredible opportunity to not only explore and learn, but to discover who they are and how they can contribute to the world.”
A New Methodology
Pooja opened the doors to Kolkata’s first of its kind preschool which taught children using learning centre instead of traditional classroom method. She integrated various world teaching practices so that multiple approaches can be used to teach the same topic to different children as per their ability and interest. To put this into action she set the teacher to student ratio as low as 1:6. She was 26, when she started teaching in a reputed mainstream urban school as a pre-primary teacher. Handling children there and also raising her own child gave her in-depth understanding and interest in child’s mind, personality and thoughts. She understood that it’s all about association and with Leap Years she is creating positive association during the early learning years and continue to reinforce them.
She brought this unique perspective into play when creating the early learning program at Leap Years. It’s an open learning source; leading educators continually contribute to it, parents are encouraged to give feedback allowing the most creative, up-to-date and advanced philosophies to be incorporated.
“Leap Years’ Teachers are great thinkers,” explains Pooja. “They’re trained to question ‘what and why’ and that is what they teach their students. They are empowered to adapt the curriculum to meet the unique needs of each student.”
As a pioneer in the field of modern education, Pooja is a sought-after speaker, educational leader, and parenting coach, sharing her progressive views with educators and parents alike. She continues to pursue studies in the field of developmental psychology, focusing on the early years.
